Regardless of the style of dance your child studies, as well as learning to move their body to the beat, they will master skills which they can leverage throughout their lives.

Not all children go on to a career in dance but you can often pick the ones who have spent time at a dance studio as they are well-rounded and thoughtful thanks to years of discipline and focus.

Good posture

Knowing how to stand up straight is definitely a skill for life. A straight spine makes you appear confident and can prevent the risk of back problems.

Dancers also get to know the names of their muscles and bones from an early age, something most children don’t start learning until they are in late primary or early high school.

Introduction to French

Having a basic knowledge of French comes in handy in many areas of life, and not just your future holiday to Paris.

The terminology of ballet is based in French and students will come to understand quite a few words as they practice. Having an understanding of French can help when learning other languages or even studying English in detail.

Introduction to Music

Dance and music go hand in hand so a student who wants to play an instrument will have an understanding of musical timing if they have experienced dance. Similarly, a student who learns music will have an advantage if they want to take up dance lessons.

Persistence

If at first you don’t succeed…

Dance is a huge lesson in patience as you do not go from your first class to Prima Ballerina status. Going over the same exercises can sometimes feel tedious but hard work pays off with the thrill of an excellent end of year performance or competition win.

When they learn to dance, children get used to the idea that practice makes perfect and learn to push themselves to achieve their goals.

Resilience

Sometimes to get the best out of a dancer, a teacher needs to push them hard. A dose of tough love usually happens after a great deal of gentle persuasion, when a teacher realises the message simply isn’t getting through.

If your child aspires to a career in dance, there will be challenging times when they feel as though the world is against them. They may wonder if the pain and stress are worth it, however their commitment will motivate them to get back up despite feeling low in confidence.

Every dancer struggles from time to time but the ones who develop a thick skin will go on to achieve amazing things.

Good nutrition

While being too thin is not the focus, a good dance school will encourage students to understand which foods are good for them and why.

Again, this can give children the edge over their peers, who may not receive the same introduction to the importance of eating well until they have deeply embedded eating habits.

Learning the importance of good nutrition at an early age sets good health for life. Your young dancer will be a step ahead from the get-go.
